Apple TV is a great device that will bring your home theater into the digital video streaming age. Most of my clients have heard of Apple TV but don’t know exactly what it is. When talking about Netflix and Youtube with my clients, the second I suggest Apple TV to them they respond with “But, we already have a TV. I don’t want to buy another one”. It’s okay, you don’t need to worry. Apple TV is not a new TV nor is it going to make your old TV obsolete. So what is exactly is it and how do I integrate Apple TV into my everyday life? Apple TV is a neat shiny little black device with three connectors on the back, and kind of resembles a coaster. But please don’t mistake it for one. This little device packs a punch in features and in price. For about $99.00, you get a video streaming device that allows you to watch video from various online apps including Netflix, Hulu, Youtube and many more. And with an Apple account, you also get access to iTunes and Apple’s streaming video rentals. I’m going to go through a couple key features that this device can offer and explain how with this device you can greatly improve your home theater experience.
The Apple TV and another great product called Apple Airport Express both have a cool feature called airplay. What airplay is is a feature that allows you to stream music, videos or photos from iTunes, iPhone, iPad and any airplay enabled device like Apple TV or Airport express via your home network. This means that if you have an iPhone and you are listening to Pandora Internet Radio, but you want to be able to hear it out of your stereo or home theater system. You can simply select the enabled airplay device from the menu on your iPhone and instantly stream it to your stereo system via your home wifi network. No wires attached!. If you don’t have a home wifi network the Airport Express will create one automatically. If you have updated your iPhone to the new iOS 5 version then you get another cool benefit which is screen mirroring. You can mirror your iPhone or iPad’s screen on your TV via Apple TV. Now you can show your friends that cool Youtube video without having them gather around a 4 inch screen. With the Apple TV you can also send pictures to your TV for viewing as well as any video or movie. With Apple TV and airplay you get a fully integrated iPhone home theater experience.
If your TV was purchased 5 years ago, there is a good chance that it didn’t come with all the cool online features that the internet enable flat-screens are offering today. No worries! If you are looking to stream Netflix to your TV the Apple TV is the perfect solution. You can search for movies, add movies to your que and watch unlimited streaming movies and shows for a small monthly fee around $10.
This is another powerful feature that will simplify the way you manage your music and video library. Homeshare allows you to sync and manage all of your purchased and downloaded content to every Apple device in your home. You don’t have to worry about renting the movie you want to watch on Apple TV if you have already downloaded it to your Mac or iTunes Library. After proper configuration of the Apple TV, your entire music and video library will be available for streaming on your home theater system.
Well that’s all I have for now. Please let me know if I missed anything or if you would like more details about this cool product. Thanks for reading.
